Originally a picnic spot outside of Mumbai, Chembur is the place where Ben Gorham's mother was born and raised. Ben visited Chembur many times as a child and returned after almost 15 years to find the area developed. Lingering still, however, was the evocative incense from a Hindu temple.

Chembur (Marathi: चेंबूर) is a suburban neighbourhood in the eastern Mumbai, India. The name Chembur is derived from the word “Chemburee” which means "Large Crab" in Marathi.

Chembur is serviced by the Harbour Line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway. Since the Sion-Panvel Highway passes through Chembur, it is an important transit point for people wanting to travel to Pune using the Mumbai-Pune Highway or the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. It is 22 km from downtown Mumbai and 20 km farther from Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport

Because of its proximity to garbage incinerators & big industries, it was once known as “Gas Chamber of Mumbai”. The use of scientific methods has ensured the decline of pollution in the town to a large extent.
